Can I just say how much fun this session was?! Back when our state shut down for everything Covid last March, I was left telling moms-to-be, graduating senior and moms that just welcomed a new baby that we had to wait. It absolutely broke my heart into so many pieces and I found myself on the phone crying with them and telling them that the second I could legally be back in business I would reach out and we would get them back on the schedule again.
This was one of those moms. I’ve known her since before she was pregnant with her first and was thrilled when she reached out to me to photograph her second maternity session including her older daughter. It’s absolutely crazy how fast time has flown!
When you have an older sibling who will soon not be the only child anymore, it’s important to keep the attention on them and praise them for how great of a big sibling they will be. How much they’re going to be an important part of this new baby’s life and how big of a job a big sister (or brother) is going to be!
These are the moments I like to take them to the side so mom can take a breather and just give some one-on-one time with the older sibling. They also give me a change to tell them we will “surprise mom” with some images since she isn’t watching. This always seems to do the trick because now we have a secret!
Can you tell mom asked her what our secret was? This little one was sooooo good at keeping it! She did NOT spoil the surprise!
After a little bit, I usually ask mom if the older sibling would like to take a bit of a break for a snack/drink and have them sit in a stroller or wagon to keep them contained. This allows me some time to get photos of mom and her adorable bump. How radiant is she?!
I peronsally believe it is so important for kids of all ages to have photos of them with their parents individually. I also encourage these photos to be printed and displayed either in playrooms or the kids’ bedrooms so they can see those images filled with candid love and fun each and every day.
Baby number 2 is another girl so I though this pretty pink blooming tree in the background was the perfect fit. We also found some dandelions and this cutie asked if she could make some wishes. I remembering asking her if she could make wishes for the new baby and she didn’t hesitate.
Believe it or not, these lilac bushes were located in the parking lot on the walk back to our cars. It provided the perfect little backdrop and you can't even tell that there was a paved parking lot or cars around us. That’s the beauty of having a photographer with an eye for the little details.
