I love styling families for Holiday Mini Sessions! There are so many options for festive outfits! You can go casual with jeans, flannel, beanies and boots! Or maybe you want your family to glam up with suits, suspenders, bow ties and sequins. Or maybe you want to go with a flowy, boho theme in festive colors. The possibilities are endless! However there are a few things to keep in mind when styling your family for Holiday Mini Sessions! Here are some tips on finding the perfect outfits for your family!

1. Choose festive colors and patterns that aren’t over-the-top Christmassy (no Santa sweaters please!) :)
2. Consider the location and/or props and choose colors and style of outfits wisely. Last year my Christmas mini sessions were held at an amazing Christmas Tree Farm in Apple Hill! There was a LOT of green so I advised my clients to wear neutrals, pops of red or non-traditional colors, but to stay away from too much green. (see pictures below to see some of my favorite images from those sessions!) A few years ago I did a “Sugar Plum Fairy” styled mini session. The traditional reds and greens would not have worked for those sessions! I styled clients in shades of pink, cream, golds and even some navy blue with lots of tulle!
3. A little bit of red goes a long way! When styling my clients for their Christmas mini sessions, I love to use pops of dark red (think cranberries) but a little goes a long way. So don’t put everyone in red — use it sparingly.
4. Be mindful of patterns. Plaid is extremely popular for Christmas mini session styling, but those bold prints can be distracting. I love plaid and buffalo checks as much as the next gal, but only use it for one person, and fill in the rest of the outfits with solid colors or smaller prints such as stripes. The one exception to this is if you use a large plaid (such as buffalo checks) and a small plaid such a gingham. Depending on the colors and patterns, this option can work well.

This year my Holiday Mini sessions are going to be held in a beautiful barn and I will be recreating a Wreath Shoppe! The inside of the barn is neutral and I will have lots of fresh greenery. So I’ve had to be careful with the colors I’m styling clients in so that they don’t blend into the background. I hope these tips will help you when styling your family this year!
